The Global Power of Chrome

Chrome (Chromium) is an irreplaceable metallurgical marvel. It is the critical ingredient that makes steel 'stainless'—providing unparalleled corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and heat tolerance. The global demand for chrome is unyielding, and South Africa is the epicenter of this industry.

72%

Global Reserves: Over 72% of the world's total economically viable chromite ore reserves are located within South Africa's Bushveld Complex.

10.5%

The Magic Ratio: Carbon steel requires a minimum of 10.5% chromium content by mass to officially be classified as rust-proof stainless steel.

85%

Stainless Dominance: Approximately 85% of all chrome mined globally is absorbed directly by the stainless steel and ferrochrome manufacturing sectors.

15.9Mt

Massive Output: Global ferrochrome production averages nearly 16 million tonnes annually, driven heavily by rapid urbanization and infrastructure development.

Chrome in Daily Life & Critical Industries

Beyond heavy infrastructure, chromium is quietly essential to modern healthcare, home life, and advanced engineering.

Medical & Healthcare

Because of its extreme biocompatibility, high wear resistance, and ability to be sterilized without rusting, cobalt-chromium alloys are the global standard for joint replacements (hips and knees), dental implants, and precision surgical instruments.

Domestic & Culinary

Chrome is the backbone of the modern kitchen. From the cutlery we eat with and the pots we cook in, to the internal spinning drums of our washing machines and the protective finishes on refrigerators, it ensures longevity and hygiene in our homes.

Automotive & Transport

Far beyond classic shiny bumpers, chrome is utilized in high-stress, high-heat engine components, exhaust systems, and transmission parts. It prevents devastating oxidation in vehicles exposed to rain, road salt, and extreme temperatures.

Industrial processing

Chromium-enhanced steel is non-negotiable for chemical processing plants, marine applications, and desalination facilities. It allows tanks and pipes to handle highly acidic, corrosive, and high-pressure environments without catastrophic failure.
